In William Faulkner's short story "A Rose For Emily" Miss Emily's house butler and the townspeople share similar qualities in the light of the fact that both of them care for Emily in certain different areas.
The reader is forced to guess at Tobe's character because Tobe plays a major role but he has no speaking parts, does not interact with the townspeople goes out to get what he needs and goes back to take care of Miss Emily. he rarely leaves Miss Emily alone in the house by herself.
The narrator never reveals age or tells us whether he is male or female. During the story always refers himself/herself with the townspeople by saying "we". The narrator draws the reader in and giving the reader a sense of being apart of the story by using "we" referring to him, the townspeople, and the reader. The narrators views begin to express the towns peoples views when Miss Emily begins to display a love interest in Homer Barron. The narrator changes his opinion about Miss Emily throughout the story. During the course of the story it seems that the narrator seems to grow in age along with Miss Emily, near the beginning of the story the narrator is characterized young and later, much older, when the narrator presents the rose to Miss Emily. During the beginning of the story, when Miss Emily was much younger, the narrator focuses alot on her stubbornness and arrogance. Later in the story, the narrator relates to Miss Emily as if he/she were the same age and talks a lot about what she has done in her lifetime.
It is difficult to say who Miss Emily would be in better hands with between Tobe and the townspeople. Of the two, both Tobe and the townspeople offer advantages and disadvantages for Miss Emily's well being. On one end, Tobe cares for Miss Emily tending to her every need for example, going to the market for her when she needs supplies and groceries. At the other end of the spectrum, the townspeople, offers accountability. If Miss Emily did not have Tobe to take care of her and was forced to interact with the townspeople it would be plausible to say that she would have not killed Homer and would have kept more of her sanity longer. It is possible that she killed Homer to cope with her exile from the town and her self-excommunication from other human beings. If Miss Emily kept every day interactions with the townspeople it is possible that she could have found a husband, rather than kill someone to "play" the part as her "undead groom".

Rough Draft Essay of "The Things They Carried"

"The things they carried were largely determined by necessity.."(1036). In the short stoy of Tim O'Brien "The thing they carried", First Lieutenant Jimmy Cross' platoon was filled with a motley of characters. Among the platoon there was Henry Dobbins, Dave Jensen, Ted Lavender, Mitchell Sanders, Kiowa, Rat Kiley, Lee Strunk, and Norman Bowker. All the soilders carried many things, things that depended on necessity, superstition, and comfort, among other things.

It was a nescessity and standard operating procedure for the men to carry rifles, body armor, ammunition, and food for basic survival. Other things they carried varied from soilder to soilder. Lietenant Jimmy Cross carried two pictures, many letters, and a pebble that were sent to him from a girl namd Martha. Along with these things associated with Martha came a small amount of physical weight as well as a large amount of emotional weight. Lieutenant Cross also carried the emotional weight of the safety and well being of his platoon. After Ted Lavender was shot dead the emotional weight of Lieutenant Cross became too much to carry thus having to leave his emotional burdans for Martha behind. Not much is told about what Martha thinks of Lieutenant Cross in th story, the only information about Martha is what Lieutenant Cross thinks about her.

Kiowa carried a Bible, His grandfather's feathered hachet, and carried emotional burdans of his mixed heritage. Ted Lavender carried tranquilizers and premium dope. It is possible that Lavender had a difficult time coping with his emotional burdans and used drugs as a catalyst to forget his problems. Henry Dobbins carried comfort food and the hose of his girlfriend around his neck. Rat Kiley carried comic books and M&Ms. For most of the soilders they all carried something that describes a part of them and which held significant value to them.

Different operations called for speical equipment for the men to carry, during the tunnel clearing mission, the men carried multiple heavy explosives. The tunnel mission also required one of the men to crawl into the tunnel to search it out before they planted their explosives. During the time one of the men were searching the tunnel the rest of the men carried the emotional burdan of the life of th soilder that was searching the tunnel.

Different people have different burdans and cope with those burdans differently. In the story O'Brien relates war to life and how the experiences you go through and how you handle those experiences make up who you are, changing you for the better or worst. Lieutenant Cross went through the experience of having one of his men die, forcing him to change his personality to become a better commanding officer for his men.
